Teachers as frontline agents of integration: Finnish physical education students’ reflections on intercultural encounters
2018
Background and purpose: This article focuses on how future Physical Education and Dance teachers may be better prepared to work in increasingly diverse education environments. It also discusses how tertiary institutions might address issues of social inclusion and cultural pluralism within their programmes, courses and assignments. The authors critically reflect on an experiential learning intervention in Jyväskylä, Finland, in which trainee PE teachers facilitated kinaesthetic language-learning workshops for asylum seekers. The applied use of physical education and dance in this context was aimed at providing a distinct opportunity to consider a PE teacher’s professional competence and rol…
Transformative, interdisciplinary and intercultural learning for developing HEI students’ sustainability-oriented competences : a case study
2022
AbstractThe literature has produced relevant theoretical insights into pedagogical frameworks, tools and competences that would be best suited to teach sustainability at higher education (HE). This article contributes to such a discussion using a course on sustainability developed by us as a case study. Two research questions are tackled in this article: (1) How to empower students to address urban sustainability challenges through the inclusion of transformative, interdisciplinary and intercultural learning into the current HE system? (2) Which pedagogical tools can be used to develop students’ sustainability-oriented competences? To address the research questions, the case study consists …
Oppiminen ja opettajuus jatkuvan oppimisen uuspedagogiikassa
2022
Yliopisto-opettajan on puolustettava sellaista jatkuvaa oppimista, jonka varassa on mahdollista rakentaa pedagogisiin suhteisiin perustuvaa, pitkäjänteistä, uudistavaa, tutkimusperustaista ja hitaasti sivistävää yliopistokoulutusta. Ketterä, työelämälähtöinen oppiminen ei siihen yksin riitä.

Tutkimukseni tarkoitus on selvittää millainen aikuiskouluttajan pedagogisten opintojen anti on pedagogisen merkitysperspektiivin kehittymisen näkökulmasta. Arvioin APO -opintojen toteutumista Jack Mezirowin transformatiivisen oppimisteorian näkökulmasta. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty kyselylomakkeella Jyväskylän yliopiston aikuiskouluttajan pedagogisten opintojen 2006–2007 vuosikurssin opiskelijoilta. Tutkimuskyselyyn vastasi 80/97 opiskelijaa. Kyselylomakkeessa on strukturoituja ja avoimia kysymyksiä. Analyysi on kuvailevaa strukturoitujen kysymysten osalta ja avoimien kysymysten analyysissä menetelmänä on sisällön analyysi. Tutkimukseni tulosten mukaan APO -opintokokonaisuus tarjoaa emansip…
Transformative Authorship Through Critical Dialogue : Concepts, Theory, and Practice
2021
This conceptual article deals with components and concepts of transformative learning, emphasizing the organization-level perspective on critical reflection. The discussion leans on the concept of transformative authorship and it is argued that it enables authoring processes through which professionals can recognize and recreate their routinized work practices. The aim of the research is to explore how professional experiences are integrated with reflexive, theoretical knowledge through critical dialogue. The authoring process of transformative authorship is illustrated with two complementary case studies from postgraduate health care education. In both cases, the learning tasks were desig…
Education for planetary well-being
2024
The aim of this chapter is to present how education can promote planetary well-being as well as what the adoption of the planetary well-being means for education. The main objective is to explore theoretical perspectives on the new concept education for planetary well-being by examining its underlying philosophical assumptions and by introducing related approaches in the field of education. There exist several initiatives and frameworks that have aimed to make education more sustainable and just, but many of these are based on the concept of sustainable development and have considerable limitations regarding their potential to address the ecological crisis and bring about urgently needed so…
